Resistance and Momentum

This morning I was thinking about salmon and was reminded again they offer a model for how to face challenges in our life.

When salmon swim up waterfalls, it looks like they are defying gravity. But in reality, they use the force of the current to propel themselves forward. Each time a salmon turns its underside into rushing water, the impact launches it upward. By continuously leaning into the force coming at them, they move further along their journey.

From afar, it seems like magic – as if they are flying. But they aren’t fighting the water; they are working with it, fully engaged in a dance of resistance and momentum.

In life, we often want to avoid what hits us hard. But like the salmon, we can make progress not by turning away, but by facing things directly. When we stay open and vulnerable, turning our underside into the current, then even in difficult moments and times, we can discover a way forward.
