I have come across this story many times and it always invites me to reflect on who I am and if the life I am living is in alignment with that person. It’s from the Talmud:
When Akiba was on his deathbed, he said to his rabbi he was anxious about death and the sum of his life. His rabbi moved closer and asked why, and Akiba confessed that he had not lived a life like Moses. The poor man began to cry, admitting that he feared God’s judgment. At this, his rabbi leaned into his ear and whispered gently, “God will not judge Akiba for not being Moses. God will judge Akiba for not being Akiba.”
Being and becoming who we are is the ultimate destination of our journey in life.
