A Sustaining Sight

I watched the sun set over a lake in Massachusetts last night and noticed different shades or orange that appeared on the water and in the sky.

Then it occurred to me that I had never thought to give names to the colors of a sunset. Yes, I would absorb the beauty, but not the specificity of the moment.

So when I got home I looked up the names of different shades of orange. A list I found included – tangerine, peach, salmon, saffron, apricot, persimmon and pumpkin.

Along with the smell of conditioner and sound of wild geese, I wonder if colors can sustain us. They are waiting for us to notice them, and if a name can bring a person into our awareness in a new way, I suspect so can colors and their names.
