A Sustaining Sound

I was on a walk last night at sunset and heard geese overhead. As the citrus mint smell of conditioner yesterday unexpectedly was comforting, this sound was sustaining as it reminded me in life there are always seasons – some perplexing and turbulent, others full of flight and joy. And I also thought of the Mary Oliver poem describing wild geese. She writes,

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on…

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting – over and over announcing your place in the family of things.
