A Place To Land

A few days ago I came across the story of an male emperor penguin who was standing on the beach in the small town of Denmark in Western Australia, about 2,100 miles from where one might expect to find it, in Antarctica.

Why was he there? Dee Boersma, a professor of biology at the University of Washington and author of Penguins: Natural History and Conservation, shared how, “Young penguins have to explore their world and you’ve got to continue to swim until you find food. But this is the furthest north I’ve heard of an emperor penguin. I think he was just looking for a place to land. You like to rest a little.”

The person who found the emperor penguin said he seemed, “completely happy. It was not at all shy. It was very friendly. It was quite happy in our company.”

At times we all go on journeys. Those journeys can take us far away or short distances. What’s inspiring is to consider when we do find a place to land, that we arrive happy to be there, like the emperor penguin, and happy with the company we find.
