To Forget Our Plans

One of the fascinating choices we make is whether we believe we are alone in the universe, or not. Whether a form of what we imagine God to be is aware, present, and active in our lives, or not. Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk and well-regarded author in the middle of the 20th century. He wrote this,

There must be a time of day when we, who make plans,
forget our plans
and act as if we had no plans at all.
There must be a time of the day
when we who have to speak
fall very silent…

If we can imagine that we are not alone, then perhaps we who seek by our planning to guide our lives might consider setting aside a time in the day when in fact, we do fall silent. Why? To invite someone, or something, else to speak and to offer a plan.
