Beyond Lines On The Page

I recently lost my paper calendar and had to purchase a new one. On my old calendar I used to cross out days and the month would have these series of lines across them. I think I did this to know exactly what day it was. I think I did this as an affirmation something was completed.

But with this new calendar, for whatever reason, I didn’t start crossing out days and now there are no lines on the page. The difference is striking. With no lines on the page it looks whole, rather than truncated. Without lines the month feels integrated, rather than separated.

Of course, neither approach is better, but it raises the question whether we see our days as singular entities, or part of a whole. Whether we believe we are mastering time, or if time is beyond lines on the page.
