There Is No Behind

I’m in Chicago to watch my son run a marathon. We were at the Expo yesterday where we ran into one of his friends who was also running.

They were discussing their goals for the race, and my son’s friend expressed anxiety that he would be in a slower corral that would put him behind his preferred pace. And my son said, “But there is no behind. There is just your journey.”

Isn’t that profound?

Yes, sometimes life presents deadlines we need to meet. But most of the time, the anxiety we create with a sense we are already “behind” is a false assessment of the present moment. Because inside the moment we are in right now, there is actually no “behind.” There is only a “now” that invites us to be grateful for the pace of a journey that is ours and ours alone.
