Prologues To The Possible

Wallace Stevens is considered one of the finest poets of the 20th century. He wrote poetry while working for insurance companies. I have always appreciated the title of his poem “Prologues to What is Possible,” where Stevens writes this line:

The way the earliest single light in the evening sky, in spring,

Creates a fresh universe out of nothingness by adding itself.

It is interesting to consider all the prologues in our lives that in time create the “possible.” A prologue that can be a simple as noticing how a single star changes our experience of a dark, evening sky. It can be how words of encouragement alters someone’s mood. It can be discovering how writing a poem, going for a run, trying a new recipe, impacts how we feel about what comes next and what is possible.
