Stacey D’Erasmo has written a book called The Long Run on how to continue to create art as the decades unfold in our lives. In her conclusion she makes this helpful observation,
“In the lives of the people I interviewed, and in my own life, will is certainly a factor… However, of equal if not greater importance is willingness. Forces arise, within and without, and it’s that willingness to turn in their direction, to yield, that seems to foster resilience.”
I love D’Erasmo’s idea that to continue to be creative in one’s life involves fostering both one’s will and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. To be creative asks, in other words, that we both resolute and flexible.
