“In the days still left,” sang Sting while a man walked 20 feet above him on a wire, “we’ll walk in fields of gold.”
This occurred in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine which was illuminated in yellow light for this performance. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of when the man, Philippe Petit, walked between the Twin Towers, an event chronicled in the documentary Man on a Wire.
In an interview about the event Petit said, “People think in old age you cannot do anything anymore. I think it’s the opposite. I think I’m more majestic, more in control, more beautiful to look at today at 74 than I was at 18. [Tonight] They will see a miracle. A man dancing in the clouds.”
It occurred to me as I was watching this “miracle” how it’s never too late to choose the clouds that we can dance in. It is faith in such miracles that inspired Petit to step on a wire 50 years ago, and it was the same faith that led him to do the same last night.
