On my way to work I walk past a stainless steel sculpture that is about 18 feet wide and 12 feet high. It is re-interpretation of the infinity symbol by renowned Australia artist Todd Stuart. You’ll find a photo of it at on-emotions.com. The plaque describing the sculpture states the artist wanted to “re-imagine the infinity symbol that unites the finite with the infinite.”
It is helpful to identify a symbol that seeks to, and even helps us, unite the finite in our lives – our relationships, health, passions, work, possessions, etc. – with the infinite – our sense and understanding of what is beyond our world, space, and time.
All religions have such symbols, from the Star and Crescent to the Cross, the aum to the Star of David. I enjoy walking past this sculpture as it reminds me, as my day begins, to watch for when and where the finite and infinite meet.
