We’re hiring for a position at work and on one resume I noticed the phrase, “multi-hyphenate.” I wasn’t sure what that meant and learned it refers to a person who links talents or professions with a hyphen. For example, “photographer-neuroscientist-writer” or “filmmaker-blogger-podcaster.”
Which got me thinking about the hyphen.
In our grammar toolbox we have the period, colon, and semi-colon, which either separate or link ideas and words. But the hyphen has a unique ability to link self-identity. Some people hyphenate last names, for example.
What elements of your life, personality, or skills, would you choose to link, or hyphen together? What would you like to hyphen together, but haven’t quite yet?
