Chief Justice John Roberts was trying to explain a recent gun law decision made by the court and used the phrase, “a law trapped in amber.”
Outside of the question whether this might be a bad or good thing in relation to court rulings, I thought it was an intriguing image and insight.
I wondered, for example, can we have “a memory trapped in amber,” or “a dream trapped in amber,” or a “regret.”
Amber beautifully preserves fossils which enables us to study them. In the display case in your mind, what have you trapped and preserved in amber? Because we have the ability to choose what we want to keep there; we are the curator of that case.
