In the documentary Drawing a Life, I saw this phrase appear on the screen – “patterns are identity.”
Which is a fascinating idea.
That the patterns we construct in our lives – when we choose to awake, if we exercise, the food we purchase to eat, the clothes we wear, the books we read, where we work, who we love, etc. – is the sum of who we are.
Which means – if we think about it – we can identify and create a new pattern if we so choose, and therefore add a new aspect to our identity. We can also delete a pattern that no longer serves us well, or even determine how many will define who we are.
