The Shimmer Is There

On this day a year ago I began On Emotions, a daily blog where I start each morning looking for a gift that might help me to feel better emotionally, physically or spiritually. This gift might be a story, insight, quote, or an idea. Then I attempt to describe that gift as best as I can. 365 posts (and gifts) later I marvel they have now been read over 40,000 times.

A few have asked what am I looking for and how do I know when I’ve found it. Yesterday I read a Joan Didion essay, “Why I Write,” where she describes in her process she looks for “the shimmer.” She writes, “Look hard enough, and you can’t miss the shimmer. It’s there.” That describes my process as well; I begin each day hoping to find “the shimmer,” and this past year has taught me two things – the shimmer does always appear and often when and where you least expect.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, I very much appreciate your time. I am also excited to share in the next 365 days I’ll be inviting a few friends to be guest contributors to share gifts that they discover within a day. I’ll also be offering a new book and a gathering (of some sort) where we can reflect together on “the shimmer” and how in our lives it can guide us to feel better.
