In his book Hidden Potential, Adam Grant makes the intriguing point that while critics perceive weaknesses and cheerleaders strengths, in order to become “a better version” of ourselves we need a coach who can discern our “potential.”
It’s easy to confuse feelings of pride or hubris with potential. When the occasion arises, we might think we can do something we aren’t really capable of, but that isn’t necessarily potential.
Potential is something we can’t see in ourselves. For example, if someone suggests that we might try something, or would be good at something, and we respond, “really?” that might be a sign we have found a coach.
