The Story, We Are

We shape a story around nearly every event we experience.

And while we can’t control most events that occur in our lives, we do control how we will shape the story that we tell others and ourselves about that event.

A rainy day, for example, can be “gloomy” or “cozy.” Traffic can be “frustrating” or a helpful reminder to “slow down.” When we lose a Wi-Fi connection we can feel anxious or notice the non-digital world around us.

A clue to what kind of storyteller we are is to pay attention to words we use when relating an experience. Do we typically draw from words like, amazing, beautiful, remarkable, inspiring, and serendipitous, to shape our story of events, or not so much? Because if we think about, events are not the story, we are.
