The Dillard Emotion

“Do not hurry and do not rest,” writes Annie Dillard in one of my favorite books, The Writing Life.

Her point was when we are attempting to achieve something in our lives there is a sweet spot to locate where we are neither leaning too far forward or too far back. Where we are neither anxious nor complacent. Where we are neither straining nor relaxing. What do we call it, this state of mind, body and soul? Maybe we give it the name, Dillard? The emotion that will guide us in the direction of purpose, achievement, and completion.
