I recently bought a book by Thomas Kemeny on advertising where he describes how each of us is, “the last line of defense against the easy way.”
I’ve often thought that we defend against “the easy way” when we say things like this to ourselves and others:
”If we were to start this project over again, what is one thing we might do differently?”
”If we were to change the sequence or speed of what we’re doing right now, how might it look?”
”What is the one thing bugging us about this approach that we haven’t said out loud.”
There is always an easy way when we have a deadline or feel rushed. Sometimes the easy way is the best way, but not always. That’s the “last line” we can choose to defend.
