Swing To The R

Did you know, as Victor Mather writes, “After 17 years of Calibri as Word’s default typeface, many users suddenly found themselves typing in a new typeface called Aptos. The change is also affecting the look of PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel?”

Mather also relates how one of the goals of Steve Matteson, the designer, was to “sneak a little humanity” into the typeface by including “imperfections” such as “little swing to the R and the double stacked g.”

In this time of expanding AI it is fascinating to consider how humanity is equated with “imperfections” such as “a little swing to the R” and it needs to be “sneaked” into programs we use. It’s also telling likely the hope of the designer was imperfections would provide this new typeface with its personality and in time, endearment.

So perhaps the lesson is, humans, let’s keep swinging to the R.
