“’Is this anything?’” is what every comedian says to every other comedian about any new bit,” observes Jerry Seinfeld in a book I bought recently where he published all the notes he kept for decades on legal pads that eventually became material for his comedy shows.
Seinfeld’s approach to life, as he writes, was “expect nothing, accept anything.” This meant he paid close attention to his life and tried to spot or to imagine the parts that made him laugh.
This is an approach we can use, if we think about it.
We can be on the lookout for what makes us laugh, for example, but also watch for what makes us feel happy, beautiful moments or situations we come across, or ideas that make us pause and wonder if this is worth pursuing. In other words we go through the day asking, “is this anything?”
