A few days ago AT&T had outages around the country and this development showed up where bars usually appear on our phones indicating strength of service: but now it read, SOS.
From 6am to 7am I thought the issue would resolve soon and didn’t consider its impact on my day. But when I headed for the subway I usually check the train schedule for delays and this time the message was, “cannot connect to server.”
So I thought, well, let’s see what’s up and learned “SOS” meant the only thing my phone could do was “emergency service.” In other words, my iPhone was now like a satellite phone you might use when you are in a remote location, like a desert.
It took most of the day for service to return and later people shared with me the experience they had of navigating without GPS. Namely, they had to relay on memory, or even trial and error, but fascinatingly in the end we all got to where we wanted to go. And perhaps this was the lesson of the AT&T SOS day – despite surprises, hardships and setbacks – you will arrive.
