I’m been enjoying The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban by John Talty. Saban recently retired as Alabama’s football coach and one of the most successful of all time.
Addressing the importance of motivating players in Saban’s approach, Talty describes how “[Saban] connected with sports psychologist Dr. Kevin Elko… after hearing him talk about hockey star Jaromir Jagr wearing the number 68 as a way of remembering his grandfather. Jagr wore the jersey to remind him of what he was playing for—his why—so Elko would instruct his audience to find their 68.”
Our 68 could be honoring a family member or friend, making a positive impact in our community, country, or world. It could be discovering how skilled we can become at a specific talent if we truly apply ourselves. It might be financial security or freedom that enables us to support other people or organizations.
To find our 68 is identifying our why, but also acknowledging that motivation in a way for others to see and to know.
