It is a wonderful gift when you are able to creatively identify a solution where everyone feels good about the decision.
An example of this occurred last night when I was ordering a steak and the server said, “how would you like it?” I answered, “I usually order medium. I know I should say medium rare in this case, but what would you suggest?
The server paused for a moment and responded, “how about medium rare… plus.”
Both of us immediately smiled at his sensitivity and ingenuity. I said, “that’s perfect.”
And I thought, isn’t “medium rare… plus” the goal whenever we are working with a server, friend, colleague, or family member to find a mutually agreeable and even enjoyable way forward.
