Alexander Calder is one of my favorite artists and known for inventing mobiles and creating dramatic sculptures called stabiles found in public spaces around the world.
During a tumultuous time in our country in the 1960s, Alexander and his wife published in the New York Times a full-page ad titled “Hope For,” where they described changes they hoped would occur:
“An end to hypocrisy, self-righteousness, self-interest, expediency, distortion and fear, wherever they exist.
With great respect for those who rightly question brutality, and speak out strongly for a more civilized world. Our only hope is in thoughtful Men – Reason is not treason.”
It’s a fascinating question to ask ourselves, what do we hope for? How would our own ad read?
