In Seamus Heaney’s poem “The Pitchfork” he describes the joy he felt in throwing a javelin. Then he makes this fascinating observation, he writes how “perfection” in the throwing of the pitchfork was “not in the aiming but the opening hand.”
In other words, what’s most important in what we set out to accomplish isn’t necessarily the spot where we are aiming, but rather that we choose to open our hand, release our intention, and give it flight.
