I saw a play last night called the Aristocrats where one of the characters had nurtured a childhood memory that was proven to be false. The character he was discussing this with was empathetic how uncomfortable his revelation was, and made the comment sometimes there is “truth beyond scrutiny.”
Meaning, perhaps in some way his memory – although proven inaccurate – was still true.
Truth beyond scrutiny is a fascinating idea.
That there exists a truth beyond our memories – whether they are false or true. That there is a truth which is not dependent on us in any way at all – our accurate or inaccurate assessments, evaluations, or recollections. Truth beyond scrutiny.
