Belichick’s Downfall or Fit?

In the New York Times yesterday were two articles about Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots football coach, who was fired. The articles offered two different titles and approaches.

The first read, “Inside Bill Belichick’s Downfall After 24 Years and Six Titles.” The second was, “Why Bill Belichick Fit in So Well, for So Long, in New England.”

We all have stories we write about in an email or share over a cup of coffee about the major events in our, or other people’s, lives. What’s fascinating is we often have the choice to tell that story from either a negative or positive perspective. Notice how one journalist chose to write about a “downfall,” the other a “fit.”

If we think about it, the perspective that we choose in how we tell a story impacts both the storyteller and the audience.
