Assignment Subud

Yesterday I visited a favorite store in Brooklyn and discovered they were selling what are called About: Blanks, which are books that have been recycled, but in a unique way. This company takes old hardback covers and then inserts blank notebooks inside of them.

In the store were maybe 50 of these notebooks and I sorted through the titles (which were on the spine of the book) and they included novels such as Huckleberry Finn, along with old poetry, engineering, and gardening books.

It was fascinating to consider how an old book cover could be the inspiration for something new to be observed or written.

Then I came across a book with the title, Assignment Subud, and I thought what is that about? I googled it and found subud is a contraction of three Sanskrit words and alludes to the concepts of “right living,” “being of good temper,” and “trusting in God.” A man in the 1920’s began an interfaith movement drawing from this contraction.

What I liked was the idea we might have an assignment in life, in particular one that points us in the direction of the concept of subud. And within that assignment are blank pages waiting for us to write and record our progress and our journey.
