In, Edge, Out

We are spending some time over the holidays next to a bay and noticed three different kinds of birds on the beach.

There were Western Gulls which sat in groups on the sand, maybe 20-30 feet from the rolling surf.

Marbled Godwits raced along the water’s edge trying to avoid the waves while poking for food with their long beaks.

But out in the water were dark birds, likely Red-necked Grebe, who comfortably rode the waves, and if a large wave came towards them, deftly submerged themselves to avoid contact.

And it occurred to me human beings are at times similar to those three kinds of birds.

There are those who like to sit far from the water, those who enjoy exploring the edge, and those who feel comfortable on, under and in.

Which kind of bird might you be? In 2024, might you want to join a different group – out on the sand, beside the surf’s edge, or on, under, and in the water.
