This time of the year invites us to become re-enchanted with the world, and our lives, as we gaze up at constellations on a winters’s night, enjoy desserts of the season, and celebrate festivals and holidays.
David Byrne is one of my favorite musicians, songwriters and authors. He is perhaps best known as founding the rock group the Talking Heads. In an interview he was asked if he was still enchanted with the world and said,
“I feel [enchantment]. I think a lot of people in the sciences feel that, too. They feel that the way things work in physics or biology… is still kind of marvelous… [and] our awareness of the network or web of connections in physics and nature and biology, there’s a sense of wonder in that connection. Yes, to me, there’s a growing sense that lots of different things in the world are related to one another and connected in ways that we are still discovering. It’s not quite religious, but it is amazing”
To perceive our life, the world and universe as “amazing” is a wonderful emotion to re-discover this season. To feel and to nurture the enchantment of all that surrounds us.
