What can we do when our mind drifts to negative thoughts? Those times when we continually replay a stressful event in our past; we feel anxious about the future, or doubt ourself?
Barbara Fredrickson is an author and Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina. Her research reveals one way to shift our mindset from negative to positive is to simply increase the number of positive thoughts. The ratio Fredrickson‘s research suggests is effective is 3:1.
Meaning, in order to adjust our attitude we need to gently steer our minds to memories that make us smile, moments for which we are grateful, and experiences and accomplishments we look forward to in the future. When the number of those kinds of thoughts outnumber the negative by a ratio of 3:1, we will experience a shift away from the negative to the positive.
