“A great wide receiver, “ observed the TV announcer yesterday, “maintains the route.”
In football the quarterback anticipates that the player he wants to throw the football to will run the route the play calls for and throws the ball to the spot where he expects the receiver to be.
Of course, the player guarding the receiver wants to prevent the player from running the route and will bump, nudge, and push the wide receiver along the way.
It occurred to me, in some facets of our lives, we are like wide receivers.
We are assigned, or accept, routes in our relationships and at work. There are emotional, spiritual, and exercise routes we run. There will also be things that seek to, or tempt us, to deviate from the route we are running.
But the great ones, as the announcer said, “maintain the route.”
