For About…

Recently, we noticed how the navigation system in our car had changed how it framed directions.

It used to say, “continue for ten miles.…”

Now it says, “for about ten miles continue….”

The addition of the word “about” is interesting.

“About” communicates that the directions we are receiving, or least our relationship to them, might not be entirely accurate.

Which led me to ponder how there are two different ways to go through life. The first is to always be, or strive to be, certain of our facts and our path. The second is to tuck an “about” into our calculations, ideas, or explanations, and intentionally leave room for error and the ability to adjust course.
