As Good As It Gets

I was walking onto the Santa Monica Pier yesterday when a woman behind me said, “well, this is as good as it gets!”

In front of us was the blue water of the Pacific, an iconic Ferris Wheel, and to the left and right an expansive beach that could rival any in the world.

And it occurred to me how the ranking system we apply to measure our experiences plays a significant role in how we perceive our life. Because, as you can expect, around us were people staring down on their phones, others were talking to each other, seemingly not noticing their environment, but this woman believed she was gazing at something marvelous.

Then it occurred to me, “as good as it gets” can be applied to any experience, because every experience we have is singular and non-repeatable. The two of us would never experience the exact scene in front of us again.

Meaning, life is, if we think about it, a sequence of “as good as it gets” moments waiting for us to notice, appreciate and enjoy.
