In Fairness To Me

“In fairness to me,” I overheard a woman say as her covered her heart with her left hand and stared indignantly at the person in front of her.

Her sentiment made me realize it matters from what vantage point we calculate what is fair and what is not.

For example, do we calculate fairness from our perspective, as this woman did? Do we take into account another person’s perspective? Or, do we use an external form of calculation, a religious or philosophical value system, when determining what is and is not fair.

Likely, we apply percentages of all three of these options when we decide if something is fair in our life.

And if we think of these fairness tabulations as a pie chart, we will have one kind of emotional response if we give ourselves 75% of that pie, 15% to others, and 10% to an external value system compared to 40% to ourselves, 30% to others, and 30% to an external measuring system.
