“Even as the leaves are falling,” observes Katherine May in her book Wintering, “the buds of next year’s crop are already in place, waiting to erupt again in spring…. We rarely notice them because we think we’re seeing the skeleton of the tree, a dead thing until the sun returns. But look closely, and every single tree is in bud, from the sharp talons of the beech to the hooflike black buds of the ash.”
I had never looked closely in autumn at what replaces a leaf after it falls, but it is fascinating to consider in nature rebirth is continual. Meaning, although we might miss noticing it, as May puts it, “The tree is waiting. It has everything ready.”
As seasons changes and leaves fall in your life what new growth is waiting for you to notice it?
What buds are getting ready in the coming weeks and months to bloom in time within the seasons and cycles of life’s renewal?
