“A person really doesn’t become whole,” observed basketball coach Jim Valvano, “until he becomes a part of something that’s bigger than himself.”
Religions, philosophers, writers, repeatedly make the point to be human is to have this feeling something is missing in our lives.
That feeling can manifest itself as restlessness, obsessiveness, self-doubt, and at times wondering in the lyric of the old Peggy Lee song, “is that all there is.”
After Jim Valvano received a devastating cancer diagnosis instead of feeling sorry for himself, he decided to speak out on the importance of appreciating every moment in life.
Valvano was so inspirational it led to starting a foundation to help other cancer patients. The lesson he came to learn and would share with others is what we think will fill the empty spaces in our lives – wealth, status, possessions, a person, a hobby, etc – never fits or fills the hole. Rather, to fill the empty spaces we need to identify that which is bigger than ourselves.
