A Long Conversation

What is prayer?

I have pointed to the work of poet Mary Oliver many times as she offers lovely, faithful insights on how to live our lives.

Yesterday I read how she suggested one way to think of prayer is as a “long conversation.”

Meaning, as with a long conversation we might have with friend, when we pray we should think of it within an expansive timeline offering moments of intense discussion, followed by moments of silence and reflection. We might laugh, tussle over an issue, even raise our voice, but ultimately what sustains the topics covered and emotions expressed is love and friendship.
