“Mozart said, ‘I like the notes that like each other,’” observed Paul McCartney in a great series on Hulu with producer Rick Rubin where he talks about his songwriting,
Paul’s point was in his career he’s tried to do that same. To put things together that like each other – melodies, lyrics, rhythms.
Of course, there is another approach to songwriting – to arrange melodies, lyrics, and rhythms that compete with each other and that create dissonance.
The difference between those two approaches can be applied to aspects other than songwriting – how we approach cooking, leadership, friendship, our career, etc.
Are you someone who likes to place notes together that like each other? Or, not so much.
