“Think through something, not about,” challenges essayist James Wood.
His point is it’s easy to talk about someone, a book, or an idea, but it’s entirely different to think through what makes someone who they are; to avoid criticizing a book before thinking through all the characters and themes portrayed; or to assess an idea from all angles, including inside out.
About is easy, through is hard.
About is superficial, through is substantive.
About is fleeting; through is transformative.
