Fifth is Your First

“I don’t want a kid to carry any baggage forward. Each play is new,” writes former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski in one of my favorite books on leadership, Leading with the Heart.

Coach Krzyzewski goes onto explain how he wanted his players to believe that if they missed four shots in a row the “fifth shot was his first shot.”

Meaning, a key to being successful is to forget all our recent mistakes and to focus simply on the next opportunity. In other words, to approach our fifth attempt, sales pitch, project, with all the faith, confidence and hope we bring to our first.
