Rough Air Planning

When we were returning from Portugal the pilot interrupted movies we were watching and said, “we will be experiencing some rough air up ahead, so I’m going to put on the fasten seatbelt sign.”

I wondered what “rough air” meant to a pilot and Travel and Leisure explained it is “caused by three main categories of interference: thermal, where warm air rises through cooler air; mechanical, where a mountain or manmade structure alters air flow; and shear, which occurs along the border between two pockets of conversely moving air.”

Those three categories I thought could also be applied to human interactions.

Meaning, rough air can be caused when someone who is angry, frustrated, or “hot” rises up in front of someone who is calm and “cool.” When something we create impedes the normal flow of things. Or, when we find ourselves moving between the border of two pockets of ideas, systems, or people moving in different directions.

If we anticipate that we might find ourselves in such situations, it makes sense to plan ahead, buckle up, and prepare to ride out the rough air up ahead.
