Entangled Necklaces

Two days ago we woke up to the shocking news of an invasion of Israel by Hamas. Speaking about these events with friends of my daughter, one commented how she thought the situation in the Middle East felt like “entangled necklaces.”

I asked what she meant by this metaphor and she explained when you wear two necklaces they can become entangled and when you try to disentangle one from the other, the situation often becomes worse.

Her family is Jewish and she said it feels like any solution to this current crisis is like “entangled necklaces,” any solution in one area could make another area worse.

Life can often become like two necklaces we try to wear at the same time. And when they become entangled, separating them can be difficult, but not necessarily impossible. Because what is required when entanglement arises is patience, and then even more patience, to separate what were once distinct entities into their original shape and identity.
