Gregg Popovich is the coach of the San Antonio Spurs, was voted into the basketball Hall of Fame, won five championships, and is the the all-time winningest coach in NBA history. He’s known for taking stands on social justice issues and coached many NBA greats, including David Robertson and Tim Duncan.
One thing that Popovich is known for is teaching his players to “pound the rock,” which alludes to how a stonecutter will pound a rock steadily with a 100 blows and no crack will appear, but then on the hundred and first swing, the stone will crack in two.
The point Popovich is making is no single blow achieves the goal, but what does is “all that had gone before.”
Persistence, in other words, is sticking with a goal we have set even when there is seemingly no outward sign of progress while trusting that with each blow, in time the break will come.
