6 Minutes Not 4

We commute to work on the subway and have noticed on our line two trains can be minutes apart, but everyone will crowd into the first train which makes it miserable for everyone. But if you choose to wait, often just a few minutes, the second train will be half full, providing a comfortable and enjoyable commute.

This happened the other day when I looked at my phone and noticed one train was coming in 4 minutes and the next one in 6. The first was packed and people pushed to get on, but we choose to get on the next one and it was nearly empty.

Sometimes it’s important to be first, to seize the opportunity, to claim your ground, but other times the opposite is true.

Choosing an enjoyable experience can be as simple as realizing time does not always need to be maximized, but instead time simply offers possibilities.

The difference between stressful and enjoyable, in other words, can often be just two minutes.
