I recently came across a coffee table book of photographs taken by Susan Middleton called Spineless which had amazing images of nudibranches, anemones, sea stars, and cowries. What these animals have in common is they are spineless. They are called invertebrates.
Did you know invertebrates comprise more than 98% of all animal life? They are also, as the book described, “nature’s fashion show.” You’ll find a stunning photograph of an invertebrate by Susan Middleton at on-emotions.com.
Studying these photographs made me remember how calling someone “spineless” has negative connotations. Meaning, a person does not stand up for others or themselves. But as I spent time with these images, I noticed how fluid these creatures were, as well as elegant, beautiful and majestic.
In other words, invertebrates are worth our time to stop and to notice, and to appreciate, for by so doing we will be reminded there are benefits to being spineless.
