Pep Guardiola is considered one of the greatest soccer coaches of all time. In a recent speech to his players caught on video, Pep emphatically said, “I hate it the most when you don’t want the ball. I hate it. You have permission to make a mistake. You have permission to lose. You have permission for everything.”
It’s fascinating to discover how the most talented soccer players in the world sometimes just don’t want the ball. They pass on the challenge, the opportunity, right in front of them.
I suspect most of us can relate. At times – no matter our skill or experience – we don’t want the ball. We don’t want to make a mistake, or lose, and the easiest way to avoid those distressing emotions and experiences is to let the ball pass us by.
But here’s the question: what would you attempt, if Pep gave you that speech?
What if you chose to want the ball when it came your way? What if you played the game of life, the field that you are on, unafraid to make a mistake, to fail.
What might happen next?
