Bumper Or Pinball?

Do you think of yourself as a bumper or a pinball?

Let me explain.

I had a recent conversation with a colleague where I observed how some conversations can feel like you’re inside a pinball machine. They’re enjoyable, but you’re bouncing around topics randomly without a real path or purpose.

Then yesterday while working through a multitude of tasks at the same time, I felt like I was the pinball. And it occurred to me the image and metaphor of a pinball machine invites us to ask if we see ourselves in life as a ball bounced from one thing to another, or as a bumper, moving a ball along its path.

Meaning, are things, projects, or people, bouncing us back and forth, up and down, or are we a bumper helping to move things, projects and people along their journey?

Of course, sometimes we can’t help being the ball, and there are other times where we need to be the bumper. But they are two very different ways of being in the machine.
